Our commitment

PICTURE Art Foundation is committed to providing an accessible digital experience. We work to improve the usability and accessibility of our Site and online content. What we have done

This site was built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA and is measured against it rather than assumed to pass. Every combination of text and background on every page is checked against the AA contrast thresholds before release, with translucent layers composited the way a browser draws them.

Each page carries one first-level heading and descends through heading levels without skipping, so the document outline matches what the page looks like. Every image has a text alternative describing what is in it, and artwork is described rather than merely named. Long documents carry a list of their sections.

Nothing on the site depends on animation or on JavaScript to be read. Motion is applied only for visitors whose system settings do not ask for reduced motion; with motion reduced, or with scripting unavailable, the full content is present and static. Form fields carry visible labels, and errors and confirmations are announced to assistive technology rather than shown by colour alone. Every page is usable from the keyboard, with a visible focus outline, and reflows to a 320-pixel screen without horizontal scrolling.

Known gaps

Accessibility work is never finished, and automated checks do not catch everything a person would. We have not yet tested this site with every screen reader and browser combination in regular use, and some of the artwork descriptions summarise paintings that reward far longer description than a caption allows.
